There are growing indications that Portuguese food might be about to break through into the mainstream and become one of the big new culinary trends.

The Trend

Tourism to Portugal was at a record high in 2017 and with more and more people experiencing Portuguese cuisine first-hand it’s perhaps not surprising that it’s starting to have an increasing influence on menus in the UK. One of the most eagerly awaited restaurant openings of recent months was ‘Londrino’ in Bermondsey which has a menu heavily influenced by Portuguese cuisine thanks to its influential chef, Leandro Carreira who was born and raised in Portugal. In a recent interview for the Evening Standard Carreira described Portugal as ‘a sleeping gastronomic giant’ and it’s easy to see why.

Diversity

What makes Portuguese food particularly exciting is the fact that its recipes are significantly different from other European countries, being influenced by Portugal’s historic links with Africa, the Far East, and the East Indies. One of the results of this is the diverse range of spices used and although most strongly associated with seafood, Portuguese cuisine is actually very diverse with many dishes and recipes using special techniques unique to the region.
